Signal Boost!! The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore discusses the movie “Aloha,” misidentifies Emma Stone as “half-Asian” and comedian Jo Koy erases Native Hawaiians

Within the first couple minutes Larry Wilmore states Emma Stone plays a half-Asian character, who’s a quarter Chinese and a quarter-Hawaiian.  Jo Koy butts in to say “I think Hawaiian is anything, it’s like Filipino, Japanese, if you’re in Hawai’i and eat spam you’re Hawaiian.”

Then they go on to discuss a movie SET IN HAWAI’I and talk only about Emma Stone as a white woman being cast to play an Asian role.

Here’s where other POC are erasing Native Hawaiian identity, history and experience.  They have taken Hawaiian out of the conversation completely, by totally denying the fact that Native Hawaiians exist, are the indigenous people to the land, and have a movie set in their home using their language (’Olelo Hawai’i).
